If you're trying to lose weight, you've probably heard the words ketosis and ketones, but what are they? And how do they help with weight loss?
What is Ketosis?
Ketosis is a metabolic state in which your body enters when you drastically reduce your carbohydrate intake and replace it with fat. Since carbohydrates were the body's main fuel source, it learns to burn stored fat instead of carbs (or sugar) for energy. This results in the buildup of acids called ketones within the body.
What are Ketones?
Ketones are made in the liver from the breakdown of fats and are formed when there is not enough sugar or glucose to supply the body's energy needs. Your liver turns the fat into ketones and sends them into your bloodstream which fuels your body's metabolism, helping you lose weight. A person eating fewer than 50g of carbohydrates daily could reach ketosis in 2-4 days; although, results vary from person to person depending on age, metabolism and activity level.
Please consult your primary care doctor before starting any diet.
